Lactose Intolerance Children: How to Deal With It
Lactose intolerance can affect many, including kids. While for most kids, comfort food means a glass of cold milk or an ice cream cone, kids with lactose intolerance see these foods as discomfort.
Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest lactose, a type of sugar found in dairy products, properly. This takes place when the body produces too little lactase, the enzyme needed by the body to process lactose. When lactose is not properly processed or metabolized, it is fermented into acids and gases at it passes through the large intestine.
Lactose intolerance often cause abdominal pain, cramps, gas, and even diarrhea, which take place in as short as 30 minutes after consuming dairy products.
There are cases when the symptoms get so severe, kids should totally eliminate any form and amount of lactose from their diet. On the other hand, some experience milder symptoms and need only to limit the amount of dairy they consume.
Most of the time, the condition is manageable, and can be kept under control with proper diet.

Dealing With Lactose Intolerance
The severity of this condition varies between kids, so there is no single way to deal with it. For each child, there is a different approach depending on how severe the case is.
Keeping a food diary greatly helps in keeping track on which food causes the symptoms.
Don’t worry about not being able to give your child dairy milk. He or she can get calcium, protein, and other nutrients from other food sources. You can get high amounts of calcium from broccoli and other green vegetables, tofu, salmon, almonds, and many more. High-calcium fruit juices are also available.
