Basic Ways of Dealing with Constipation in Babies
Often we get worried when our babies take up to a week or even two without relieving themselves, and when they finally do, they seem to be straining. This could only mean one thing; your baby is constipated and lacks enough water to help in relieving himself. For this reason, you should take some helpful measures, just as is mentioned below:
- Increase water intake of the baby
The primary cause of constipation is lack of water. It is for this reason that you should increase the amount of water your baby takes. For instance, if you were used to giving him ten spoons of water after feeding, you can add two or three more spoons. Additionally, you can start giving him fruit juice, especially prune or pear, as they are healthy and of high water content.
- Help your baby exercise
Helping your baby exercise helps in quickening digestion and increasing the movement of food in the body, hence releasing the abdominal pressure that could be causing the holdup. If the baby is not walking yet, the leg bicycles can help, which means, placing him on the back and moving his legs in a circular motion, as if he is riding a bicycle.
- Use pureed foods
While some solid foods increase constipation, others actually improve digestion and emptying of the bowels. Foods rich in fiber like pears, broccoli and prunes are most recommended. Additionally, you should go for cooked grains like barley and oats which are more helpful than the refined cereals.
- Massage the baby’s stomach
Sometimes when your baby is having constipation, all they need is a push on the abdomen to loosen up. So, gently rubbing or massaging the baby’s stomach or abdomen will stimulate the bowels, which will after that loosen the abdomen and allow the baby to relieve himself. Place the baby on the back, rub his stomach in a clockwise manner, applying the right amount of pressure and it will impact the abdomen.
- Check your diet
In their early ages, babies depend entirely on breastfeeding. Whatever the mother takes is what they receive, and for this reason, if your diet is unhealthy, then your baby will also be affected. You should, therefore, check your food, or better still change it since constipation could be as a result of what you have been eating.
- Change formulas
Lastly, if your baby is using formulas, you should consider switching to a different one since your baby could be allergic to the one you are currently using.
Constipation is a common thing among babies and even adults. Correct it by just ensuring you are highly hydrated.
